About Us
Plymouth-Canton Community Literacy Council (CLC) is a volunteer, non-profit organization aiming to improve adult literacy in Plymouth-Canton and surrounding areas of Western Wayne County. Since 1985, the Community Literacy Council (CLC) has been empowering adults with English literacy skills below a 9th-grade level—free of charge! Most of our learners are adults new to the U.S., often connected to the automotive industry, who are learning English as a second language (ESL).

Our mission is to provide adults in Western Wayne County who have limited English language abilities in developing vital reading, writing, and communication skills to help them participate in the community and reach their potential in life.
We are deeply grateful to Delta Kappa Gamma for their generous donation of $1,950 in support of adult literacy in the Plymouth-Canton Community. 💙
As a nonprofit organization, donations like this are essential to our mission. This gift will help us purchase books and instructional software, as well as provide training for our volunteer tutors—ensuring we can better serve adult learners as they work toward their English literacy goals.

The Plymouth-Canton Community Literacy Council (CLC) extends our heartfelt thanks to the Plymouth Rotary Foundation for their generous $5,000 donation in support of Burlington English software.
This funding enables CLC to provide a comprehensive, high-quality English language curriculum to adult learners at all proficiency levels. Burlington English is particularly beneficial for our low-beginner English language learners—individuals who often face the greatest barriers to education, employment, and community engagement. The software offers accessible, structured instruction that helps learners build essential language skills, confidence, and independence.
We are deeply grateful to the Plymouth Rotary Foundation for their partnership and commitment to strengthening our community through adult literacy. Their support makes a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of the learners and families we serve.
We are incredibly grateful to the Consumers Energy Foundation for their generous $7,500 grant in support of our work!
This funding will directly support tutor training, learner support, and software programs that empower both our learners and volunteer tutors. Thanks to this investment, we can continue strengthening literacy and creating meaningful learning opportunities in our community.

What inspired you to start volunteering as a literacy tutor?
I remember the children in my classrooms who struggled with reading and the effects those struggles had on them. Adults who struggle with literacy have additional burdens associated with literacy challenges, but not limited to isolation from others. The thought of someone living apart from others in a community due to literacy challenges was so unacceptable to me that I took action to become a tutor.

What would you say to someone considering becoming a literacy tutor?
My friends often tell me that they could never be a tutor. I tell them that they are wrong. They know a lot more than they think they know. If they are willing to make a connection and talk, they can make a difference.
