Plymouth-Canton Community Literacy Council (CLC) is a volunteer, non-profit organization aiming to improve adult literacy in Plymouth-Canton and surrounding areas of Western Wayne County. Our mission is to provide adults in Western Wayne County who have limited English language abilities in developing vital reading, writing, and communication skills to help them participate in the community and reach their potential in life.

Since 1985, the Plymouth-Canton Community Literacy Council (CLC) has been empowering adults with English literacy skills below a 9th-grade level—free of charge! Most of our learners are adults new to the U.S., often connected to the automotive industry, who are learning English as a second language (ESL).

What inspired you to start volunteering as a literacy tutor?
I remember the children in my classrooms who struggled with reading and the effects those struggles had on them. Adults who struggle with literacy have additional burdens associated with literacy challenges, but not limited to isolation from others. The thought of someone living apart from others in a community due to literacy challenges was so unacceptable to me that I took action to become a tutor. - CLC Tutor

What would you say to someone considering becoming a literacy tutor?
My friends often tell me that they could never be a tutor. I tell them that they are wrong. They know a lot more than they think they know. If they are willing to make a connection and talk, they can make a difference. - Lynn, CLC Tutor
