Plymouth-Canton Community Literacy Council (CLC) is a volunteer, non-profit organization aiming to improve adult literacy in Plymouth-Canton and surrounding areas of Western Wayne County. Our mission is to provide adults in Western Wayne County who have limited English language abilities in developing vital reading, writing, and communication skills to help them participate in the community and reach their potential in life.

Community Literacy Council's Inclusion and Anti-Harassment Policy
At CLC we work with people from many different cultures and backgrounds. CLC is a safe place, absent of xenophobic, racist, and sexist language and behavior. Further, sexual harassment of any form will not be tolerated. Our values at CLC support our beliefs of inclusivity and respect for all people. Our learners are shown the kindness, respect, and grace that each member of our CLC family deserves, so that they may continue to thrive in our community.
Since 1985, the Plymouth-Canton Community Literacy Council (CLC) has been empowering adults with English literacy skills below a 9th-grade level—free of charge! Most of our learners are adults new to the U.S., often connected to the automotive industry, who are learning English as a second language (ESL).

What would you say to someone considering becoming a literacy tutor?
My friends often tell me that they could never be a tutor. I tell them that they are wrong. They know a lot more than they think they know. If they are willing to make a connection and talk, they can make a difference. - Lynn, CLC Tutor

WDET, National Public Radio, featured CLC in a broadcast that focused on how businesses and organizations in Canton were responding to the pandemic. It takes a lot of courage to travel to a new country, learn a new language, navigate a pandemic, and ask for help. Our students are adventurous and brave individuals. And our tutors are Rock Stars!
