What inspired you to start volunteering as a literacy tutor?
I was inspired to volunteer as a literacy tutor when I saw a posting for training new tutors. In my daily reading of the news it seems like immigrants are being unfairly singled out as one of the biggest problems our country faces. I disagree with the way they are being treated and I think that helping migrants learn English is one way I can make their transition to life in the United States a bit easier and also make them feel welcomed. As a retired middle school teacher, I also missed working with students.
It has been so much fun helping my ELL student make new discoveries. I have found that I need to let her guide me on what she needs to know. She asks great questions! I use her questions to help me develop our next tutoring session. As a former teacher herself, she asks many grammar questions and even though I know that shouldn't be our focus I do my best to build it into what she is learning. She is so appreciative of everything I do and I get great satisfaction out of hearing her speak English with more confidence. I am really enjoying tutoring! - Lori, CLC Tutor
Love of reading was the most significant motivator in my decision to become a literacy tutor. Another factor was my 8 years of experience as a substitute teacher at the middle school level, most consistently in special education classes where the frustration at not having literacy competence often affected students' self-esteem and confidence. One on one attention was often all a student needed to support their efforts. - Susan, CLC Tutor
