Literacy means to me, freedom and opportunity to better your life and gives you the tools to better understand today's ever changing world because you are able to read, write and understand while thinking for oneself for a lifetime
I recently had a session with my learner working on pronunciation, the learner was really struggling with some of the sounds of our words as her language did not contain these sound. The learner and I spent almost the entire session working on a particular sound annunciation which was very difficult and exhausting for her. I aksed her to work on these sounds at home and we would review next session. She came into the room with a big smile on her face and proceeded to pronounce the words very well and was so proud of herself,as was I proud of her. I can only imagine the difficult work she had to do on her own to accomplish this very difficult assignment.
We always begin each session with me asking, "How was the last week and what did you do?" At first, It may be very difficult to for the learner to answer this question, but over time it becomes less difficult because of the work we have done together and the work the learner has done by themself, I notice the improvement week after week and make sure I share with them their progress. I measure success when the learner can come into our session and is able to talk to me and answer the question without having to think too much about it and with much improvement in their ability to speak well enough to make themselves understood in English. - Ken, CLC Tutor
