History
The Community Literacy Council, Inc. was founded in 1985 in partnership with the Plymouth-Canton Community School District. We are a volunteer, non-profit organization aiming to improve adult literacy in Plymouth-Canton and surrounding areas of Western Wayne County. We provide free literacy tutoring to adults via one-on-one instruction or small conversation groups. Our tutors undergo 12 hours of training and customize each of their lessons to the individual needs of their students. In 2019 alone, our tutors volunteered more than 9100 hours of their time to promote literacy in our community.
Mission
The Community Literacy Council assists adults in Western Wayne County who have limited English language abilities in developing vital reading, writing, and communication skills to help them participate in the community and reach their potential in life.
I volunteer because...
I volunteer because I feel so fortunate about being given all of the things I need that I want to “pay it forward” and ensure others are fortunate as well. This also means affording others the vast opportunities which I’ve received.
What does successlook like to you as a tutor?
To me success as a tutor looks like my learners arriving eager and early to the tutoring sessions. Success is evident when my learner no longer makes the pronunciation mistakes they used to. Success is having a learner’s face beam with joy and confidence after a session is complete, and they feel good about what they’ve (we’ve) accomplished.
